Authentic Italian home-cooking serving Calgary through multiple generations since 1996.
Our story began in 1965 in the charming province of Campobasso, Italy. Nonno Franco Rea was visiting his hometown of Bonefro and decided to take a Taxi to Alfredo De Michele’s Cantina. As fate would have it, a young lady (Nonna Maria) caught Nonno Franco’s eye as she stood on the balcony. Their connection was instant, and by the end of that week, Nonno Franco proposed to Nonna Maria.
Nonno Franco’s vacation eventually came to an end, and he had to return to work in Alberta, Canada. Determined to be together, he sponsored Nonna Maria to join him in Canada, and in late 1966, she made the journey to begin their new life together. In September of 1967, Nonna Maria gave birth to their first child, Michelangelo (Michael) Rea, followed by their beloved children Maria, Anna, and Alfredo.
Years later, Michael and his wife Nancy had the opportunity to fulfill their dreams when they purchased Sandro Restaurant & Pizzeria in 1996. The quaint Italian restaurant quickly won over the hearts of customers, leading to loyal patrons and cherished friendships.
Unfortunately, a devastating fire struck in 2009, forcing them to temporarily close the restaurant. Undeterred, they persevered and rebuilt the establishment, giving birth to REA’S Italian Cucina later that year. With the same owners, the same cherished menu, and the same exceptional pizza from their beloved oven, they were once again open for business.
However, life took an unexpected turn in 2017 when Mike passed away due to health complications. His passing left the restaurant in the hands of Nancy and their children, who were determined to carry on his legacy and continue to do so.
